Revitalise your team’s functionality and

Why facilitation? Team-working can be really effective. But truth is, many teams tend to flounder if left entirely to their own devices. People get distracted, diverted or lost in the detail, paying lots of attention to what has to be done – with little (if any) awareness of how they’re going about doing it.

To get great results, teams need good group process. This is where the facilitation role comes in. Asking good questions, clarifying, focusing on goals, summarising and making a team’s work easier by structuring and guiding patterns of participation – all crucial in all team settings.

Anyone can learn how to facilitate, but integrating facilitation into your leadership approach is a terrific opportunity for leaders to encourage more collaboration, involvement and accountability within their teams while inspiring more focused activity, more constructive conversations and more harmonious, creative and supportive relationships.

Are you facing any of these team challenges at work?

  • Discussions dominated by a few outspoken or overly-assertive individuals?
  • Poor processes for generating ideas, sharing information or making decisions?
  • Lack of engagement, stagnation, withdrawal, disinterest or passivity?
  • Conversations go off-track, round in circles or don’t dig down deep enough?
  • Ongoing stand-offs, feuds, competition or rivalry between team members?
  • Unresolved differences or lack of clarity about goals and priorities?
  • Decisions and actions not sufficiently supported or actioned (and often resisted)?
  • Groups discussions deteriorate into debate and argument, and nothing gets solved?

Leaders profit from playing the role of facilitator

Facilitative leadership is a set of tools and a style of personal influence every team can benefit from. As a facilitator, you’re a powerful model for skilful listening, constructive conversation and collaborative problem-solving. The intent is to achieve maximum involvement, creativity and commitment to the task at hand, while channelling conflict and disagreement constructively.

Most people you lead want to be involved and consulted, not coerced. We’ve known for ages how this raises motivation, commitment and satisfaction levels – and stimulates enhanced productivity.

With its focus on asking not telling, engaging and guiding rather than controlling or directing, pulling together rather than competing, a facilitated approach gives leaders a new way of relating – of developing your team to direct themselves rather than lead from the top.

I’ve done quite a bit of facilitating before but Facilitating Effective Teams was informative, interactive and relevant. Excellent content with a great take-away guide that gave me new tools for my toolbox. I plan to use some with my teams and colleagues. Bill you did great. I found you approachable, respectful, very inclusive and engaging.

Leading teams in more

There’s more to facilitation than routine meeting mechanics. It’s a philosophy about how to help groups navigate their way through what they have to do in ways that maximise contributions, create cohesion, harness collective ideas and energies – and, ideally, have a bit of fun along the way.

Facilitating effectively requires an enabling, empowering, disciplined-but-relaxed approach. In this highly practical program we’ll explore how you can help to open minds so people can see the connections between tasks and the team, in an enjoyable, constructive and liberating way – not an overly directive, ‘do-this-now’ style.

Facilitative leaders work behind-the-scenes to get results for their teams.  They work in partnership with them to create a climate where they help them discover for themselves what to do, where people are encouraged and entrusted to take action. See our ArticleWhy Facilitation is Fundamental to Leadership.

I learned some great strategies for encouraging participation within a group from each member, and also how to be an effective facilitator.
The hands on activities and taking turns to facilitate were very useful and the facilitation guide is an excellent resource to flick back through and refresh. Thank you so much again for the two days. I found them so valuable and have learned a great deal.

Thoroughly enjoyed the workshop – it delivered on facilitation strategies and models and has given me much food for thought... An informative, practical approach with good practice opportunities. It gave me more confidence to apply different tools in different scenarios.

Your Facilitator - a Brief Introduction...

Bill Cropper

Director

“When I look back on my facilitation track record so far, I realise that what I’ve learned about practical facilitation, comes not just from facilitating myself or with others, but also, more importantly, from those I’ve helped learn facilitation, who’ve taught me valuable lessons about what seems to work when it comes to helping groups work effectively together…”

Your presenter, Bill Cropper, is an accomplished, lively and engaging facilitator, with over 25 years practical experience helping all sorts of teams in all kinds of cultural contexts, work collaboratively together to achieve results that matter most to them. His facilitation assignments encompass a broad spectrum of events and topics in a variety of business settings.

He’s authored numerous facilitation guides, trained literally thousands of executives, leaders, trainers, project groups and work-teams to develop critical facilitation skills needed to achieve their outcomes, and run a remarkable array of facilitation skills clinics, leadership programs, complex change and culture strategy sessions; work process redesign and team formation programs; future search and community development sessions, to name a few.

“Bill is a dynamic, people-focused facilitator - a warm and engaging person who puts everyone at ease to maximise group learning and create a supportive and safe environment. I feel very comfortable attending your courses as I like your relaxed, open, non-judgemental style as a facilitator.”
